How Much Chlorine is Enough?

| |

Special thanks to Shaneque B. for writing this post.

Students have learned that chlorine kills harmful pathogens in water, decreasing infection rates of many diseases. However, drinking chlorinated water also increases the risk of bladder and rectal cancer. This brings us to the question... just how much chlorine is enough?

In the classroom, students studied the concept of concentration, and learned that chlorine level in water is measured in parts per million. Once they got to the lab, they conducted a series of dilutions to produce solutions with different concentrations of chlorine. Using these solutions, they tested to see which concentration of chlorine able to kill algae, a harmless microorganism.

Performing the dilutions

Measuring out 5mL of algae water

Pointing out color changes

Which cup would you drink from?
